Pickeral or Walleye
Our most popular game fish is elongate and robust with many
sharp teeth and a large opaque eye. The average weight is 3lb.
It occurs throughout Ontario spawning in spring shortly after
ice break-up in shallow water over gravelly bottom. |

Muskelunge
The area is famous for Muskie fishing. Also called Maskinonge,
this pike like fish has vertical bars or spots on it's side.
Average from 12lbs to 30lbs, they are common catches for anglers
with know-how. Use large lures, giant minnows and rapalas. |

Northern Pike
This popular game fish with the duck like jaws has many light
coloured spots on its side and averages about 2-4lb. Each year
fish weighing more than 20-25lb are caught. |

Largemouth Bass
Dark irregular bars from head to tail. The upper jaw extends
beyond the back of the eye. Deep notch between dorsal fins.
They are more often caught in weed beds which provide natural
shelter. Abundant throughout the Buckhorn area. Average weight
is 3lb |

Smallmouth Bass
A member of the sunfish family. Dark vertical bars on its sides.
The jaw does not extend beyond the back of the eye. They are
found along rocky shoals by still fishing with frogs, minnows
and crayfish. Abundant throughout the Buckhorn area. Average
weight is 2-3lb. |

Perch
This popular fish occurs throughout Ontario to Hudson Bay. It
may exceed 1lb in the Great Lakes but averages 4-10oz. In April
or May it spawns in shallow waters. |

Panfish
They are caught float fishing off weed beds using worms, but
can also be caught on fly rods using small poppers. Despite
their small size, averaging 1/4lb, they provide many happy hours
of angling for the young and old alike. |

Lake Trout
This trout with its deeply forked tail fin is one of our largest
freshwater fish. Found in deep lakes throughout much of Ontario
it spawns on rocky shoals in late September through to November.
Average weight is 3-5lb. |

Catfish or Bullhead
Often just called Bullhead this square tailed catfish with white
underparts is found throughout Southern Ontario and as far north
as Mattawa and Sault St. Marie. Average size is from 8-10oz.
It spawns in shallow waters in the spring and the male gaurds
the young for some weeks. |

Common Carp or Wild Carp
Carp are found throughout southern Ontario and are abundant
in the area. They typically inhabit shallow waters of lakes
and lower reaches of large rivers, usually associated with aquatic
vegetation. Carp are bottom feeders and can be caught using
doughballs, kernel corn, worms and various other concoctions.
They can be formidable opponents because ot their large size
ranging from 10lbs to 35lbs.
